The compendium is an important tool to guarantee high-contrast images free of stray light effects: it protects the lens from unwanted rays of light. The compendium with scissor-extension is the ideal option when considering size and complexity.
Also for the format 4x5 makes this "great" compendium quite sense! That is when you work with short focal lengths. Due to the large front lens diameter of e.g. Rodenstock HR Digaron S 4.0 / 35 (70mm front lens) the use of the "small" 4x5 compendium is very uncomfortable. It is much more comfortable with this one.
